Thermal imaging – cold spots

This video shows a massive cold spot behind an electric fuse board. The electrician had left large holes through the wall and insulation, which allowed the free flow of cold air into the hallway.

Closing off the holes and repairing the cavity insulation completely cured the problem, resulting in a much warmer room.

Thermal Imaging – pipework location

These thermal images show locations of the central heating pipework running under the floorboards and down behind plasterboards.

Being able to accurately locate pipes is useful to prevent damage to pipework and when making alterations. Thermal imaging is also very good when balancing central heating systems.

The images below show the routing of pipework under the wooden floor – the hot pipes show in orange.

Thermal Imaging – poor insulation

These thermal images taken in an upstairs bedroom shows a large strip of insulation missing in the loft, resulting in a large heat loss and a cold room. The surface temperature is represented by the colour – blue is cold and orange is hot.

The missing insulation was not obvious as it was under the eaves in the loft and would not have been spotted without the use of the thermal imaging camera.

The customer originally assumed that the coldness in the room was due to the upvc windows, but this proved not to be the case.

Thermal Images taken before and after remedial work

Note that in the first thermal image, there is a large area of cold ceiling (lots of blue) which is almost entirely gone after the insulation had been sorted.
